About the Artist

Kathryn Foster was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, January 13, 1960.  Her work has been exhibited in galleries, restaurants, universities, medical schools and banks on the Mainland since 1985.  She married and moved to Hawaii in October of 1996.  She established her art on the islands of Oahu and Kauai.  She also exhibited her art on the famous, "Honolulu Zoo Fence" where she sold her art to tourists from all over the world.

She has been an artist since the age of seven.  She graduated from Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in fine art and a certification to teach kindergarten through the twelfth grade.  She taught art both privately and publicly for two years while building her portrait business.

She feels fortunate to have acquired Joseph Wallace King, the famous portrait artist, better known abroad as, "Vinciata," as her mentor.  King was a tough critic and few artists could take his blunt advice.  Foster enjoyed him because he was to the point and could do the things he asked her to do.  She also loved his quick wit.  He taught and advised her until his death, January 15, 1996.  King was best know for his painting of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1972 and his portraits of other dignitaries.

Foster has a romantic style of painting that she feels was attained from King.  She is influenced by the great Impressionists and has followed their style and technique in her work as an artist.  Her favorite mediums are soft pastels, oils, watercolors and acrylics.  Foster enjoys exploring her talent and painting a wide variety of subject matter.  She often lets the subject dictate her choice of medium.

Foster believes that, "Artist's should capture scenes that hold special meaning in some way to both the artist and the viewer."  She is best known for her tropical florals and scenes of the Hawaiian Islands.
